Business SMS · Australia Early access

Texts that reach every phone in Australia.

Not everyone has WhatsApp. Everyone gets texts. Delivery updates, appointment reminders and login codes from your business name, with replies going straight to your team in Slack.

  • Australian numbers
  • Your sender name
  • Set up for you

A text message thread from a business: a delivery update, a login code, the customer replying with instructions and the business answering.

Why SMS

The one channel every customer has.

No app, no account, no data needed. When it absolutely has to arrive, a text message is still the safest bet.

  • Every mobile in Australia

Any phone, any carrier, no app required.

  • Your business name

Messages show your registered sender name, or an Australian number customers can reply to.

  • Replies into Slack

Two-way: replies land in the customer's Slack thread with everything else they've sent.

  • Delivery receipts

Know it arrived, and when, for every message.

  • The safety net for WhatsApp

When WhatsApp can't deliver, the same message goes by SMS automatically. Login codes fall back to a call.

  • Spam Act done right

Consent recorded, your business identified, and STOP honoured automatically.

The deep dive

Business SMS in Australia, in detail

Sender names and numbers, the rules under Australia's Spam Act, how message length affects cost, and how SMS works alongside WhatsApp.

01How it works

  1. Your system (booking, job, store, accounting) asks our gateway to send a message.
  2. The gateway checks consent and opt-outs, applies your caps, and sends it through Australian carrier routes.
  3. A delivery receipt comes back from the network: delivered, or why not.
  4. If the customer replies (to a number), the reply goes to their Slack thread, alongside their WhatsApp and Messenger conversations.

02Sender name or number?

Australia has an SMS Sender ID Register run by the ACMA to stop scammers impersonating businesses with their names. We register your sender name as the register requires, so your messages aren't blocked or labelled as suspicious.

03The Spam Act, in plain English

Commercial text messages in Australia are covered by the Spam Act 2003, enforced by the ACMA. Three rules:

  1. Consent. Express (the person agreed) or reasonably inferred from an existing relationship. We record where consent came from.
  2. Identify yourself. Every message says who it's from. Our templates always include your business name.
  3. Easy unsubscribe. A working way to opt out, honoured within five working days. We honour STOP instantly and automatically.

Purely transactional messages (a delivery update, a login code, an appointment reminder for something booked) are treated differently from marketing, but we apply the same care to both.

04Message length and cost

SMS is charged per part. How many characters fit in a part depends on the characters you use:

EncodingSingle messageEach part of a longer messageTriggered by
GSM-7 (standard)160 characters153 charactersPlain letters, numbers and common punctuation
Unicode70 characters67 charactersEmoji, curly quotes, some accented and non-Latin characters

One emoji can turn a one-part message into a three-part message. Our templates are written to stay in one part, and the gateway converts curly quotes and dashes to plain ones before sending.

05SMS and WhatsApp together

  • WhatsApp first where the customer has it: richer, branded and cheaper per message.
  • SMS fallback when WhatsApp can't deliver (no WhatsApp on that number, or a delivery failure), automatically, with the same content.
  • Login codes go WhatsApp → SMS → a phone call, so nobody is locked out.
  • A customer who replied STOP on WhatsApp is never moved to SMS: an opt-out is respected on every channel.

06Delivery and reliability

"Delivered" means the handset received it. Messages to phones that are off are held by the network for a while and delivered when the phone comes back. Undelivered messages are reported with the reason. Codes are never retried after they expire, so a late code never arrives after the customer has given up.

07Templates that work

  • Delivery: "Saltwater: Your order #1043 arrives today between 9 and 11 am."
  • Reminder: "Saltwater: Reminder of your tasting tomorrow at 2 pm. Reply C to confirm or R to reschedule."
  • Code: "Saltwater: Your code is 482913. It expires in 10 minutes."
  • Payment: "Saltwater: Invoice INV-1042 ($64.00) is now due. Pay: [link]"
  • Outage: "Saltwater: We're aware of a delay affecting deliveries today and will update you here."

Go live

Compliant from the first message.

We register your sender name, set up your reply number, and switch on opt-outs and delivery receipts before anything is sent.

  • Consent and opt-outs handled for you
  • Messages identify your business, as the Spam Act requires
  • Fallback for WhatsApp switched on

A go-live checklist for business SMS: sender name, reply number, opt-outs, consent, delivery receipts, Slack and WhatsApp fallback.

Slack inbox

Text replies, answered from Slack.

When a customer replies to a text, it lands in their Slack thread, next to their WhatsApp and Messenger conversations. Reply there and it goes back by SMS.

  • One thread per customer, every channel
  • Matched to your customer records
  • Internal notes with //

A Slack thread for one customer, with their card, question, staff reply and an internal note.
